Session 6

Day Two

The transformational role of Big Data Technologies and Analytics- Climate Change, natural disasters and big data analytics: A regional perspective

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Keynote and Panel Discussion

The escalated frequency of climate change-induced natural disasters in the Caribbean exposes the need for comprehensive mitigation strategies. This session examines the transformative role of big data technologies and analytics in understanding and combating climate change and its repercussions in the Caribbean. Using examples from the Caribbean region, the session will explore how big data analytics provides insights into weather pattern changes, volcanic activity, and hurricane trajectories to predict potential disaster hotspots. It further delves into how this information can help in designing effective disaster management strategies, from disaster risk reduction to post-disaster recovery. It looks at how big data advancement can significantly improve disaster monitoring, prediction, and responses, leading to better protection of at-risk communities and ecosystems.

The panel discussion will consider the potential of big data technologies and analytics as a powerful tool for adaptive and resilient strategies against climate change-induced natural disasters in the Caribbean; and how the adoption of these technologies presents opportunities for sustainable development as the Caribbean navigates the intensifying impacts of climate change.
